Jane Doe a Go Go

Stumbling across the Glasgow Rollergirls MySpace page pretty much changed my life! Firstly it meant roller derby, probably the only sport I’ve ever taken an interest in, was happening in the UK. Secondly Glasgow had a team. I was born in Glasgow! This was like a massive sign I somehow had to be involved!

If I’m honest I didn’t have a clue what roller derby was but I didn’t care. It involved quad skates and cool outfits, that was good enough for me! I set about frantically trawling the internet to see if there was a team based in Sheffield. I was out of luck. So I had a crazy idea to try and start a team. This would prove to be tricky. I hadn’t lived in Sheffield very long and didn’t know anyone, but I thought this could be the perfect way to meet people.

I set up a Myspace page and added what seemed like a million people to it. Lots of people seemed to be interested in roller derby but not interested enough to strap on a pair of skates and give it a go. Then one day a little ray of light appeared in my inbox. That little ray of light would eventually become Rabid Kitten! We set about spreading the roller derby word around Sheffield and our numbers grew! I think there were 5 of us that turned up to that very first session on the 10th of August 2008. We now have over 60 members. It’s unbelievable how far we’ve come in the last couple of years. I still find it amazing that something so awesome came from me. I never do awesome things ever. I’ve been skating as part of SSRG for 3 years now and i love it. I’m so excited to see where SSRG will go from here.
