Rio De Jam Hero

How I got into roller derby…back in 2008 two friends (Skate Crasher and Mia Malice) told me about an awesome new sport they were doing called roller derby, I checked it out on line and could only find terrifying USA 70s banked track weirdness, I decided they were crazy! After a while and I’m still not sure what changed my mind, I decided to give it a go, I’m so glad I did! I remember being as nervous as a mouse at my first training session, but it only took one session to be hooked. Even though I’d skated a fair bit as a child, wearing skates for the first time in 20 years was pretty nerve wracking, but I was soon giving as good as I got.

Derby skills… My favourite skater position is jammer, but I also love any opportunity to positional block and hip check. I always want to be in front of the pack too, pretty handy when being a jammer! I’m also a bit of a rules and tactics geek.

Inspirations and goals…roller derby world domination!! Haha joke…well maybe! Seriously though, to always train hard and keep learning with the goal of being a skilled skater on an awesome team. I love watching LRG and US team bouts to see what I can learn, my favourite bout ever (so far) was Anarchy in the UK, the American teams were awesome and totally inspiring! The enthusiasm of the SSRG ladies is pretty inspirational too, particularly Marianne Faithkill and Holly Hotrod with their skills and relentless enthusiasm, Mia Malice who always wins the afterparty and Miss D Nightshade's super-motivating coaching!
