Are you a fan of the Sheffield Steel Rollergirls?

If you are, just click on the envelope or here, and let us know!  You'll be one of the first to be told about new bouts, when we're recruiting, and other cool stuff.  We'll also give a random fan a prize now and then (like a free ticket).  Nice!  And of course, we'll never share your details with anyone.

Meet the team they like skates

We have scoured the whole of Sheffield, including the weird bits, to bring you quite possibly the world's most awesome team*.  We're proud of our team, so here's a little on everyone in it.

*May not be true.  We're good, but perhaps that was a bit of an overstatement.

"Id been to see an LA Derby Dolls bout that summer but didn’t have a clue what was going on! When I got back to Sheffield I saw a poster advertising that someone was trying to set up a team in Sheffield so I thought i'd give it ago. That was 3 years ago and it has taken over my life ever since"

"In 2008 two friends told me about an awesome new sport they were doing called roller derby. I checked it out online and could only find terrifying USA 1970s banked track weirdness. I decided they were crazy. After a while I’m still not sure what changed my mind, but I decided to give it a go and I’m so glad I did!"

"If I’m honest I didn’t have a clue what roller derby was but I didn’t care. It involved quad skates and cool outfits, that was good enough for me! I set about frantically trawling the internet to see if there was a team based in Sheffield. I was out of luck. So I had a crazy idea to try and start a team"

I got into roller derby really by accident, looking for something to do on Sunday afternoons that was more fun than lazing around eating chocolate. By chance i saw an article in the local paper about a new women’s sport called Roller Derby and the Sheffield team that was looking for members. A quick Google later and I was really excited to give it a go.

When asked to submit a bio for this site, Fury gave us a short excerpt from a film she just made up. A scary film, that someone needs to make. It is, however, an interesting insight into the Fury that needed to be censored in several places. Some say that if you read it, you will die within 24 hours.

"I would wear my skates 24 hours a day if I could (Sheffield would need to be flattened out a bit though!). My favourite position is jammer but I'm working hard on being better in the pack, my skate out song would probably be something by Daft Punk, I love dancing - I'm generally found on the dancefloor at afterparties!"

"I'm the illegitimate child of Japanese assassin Lady Snowblood and a freak show contortionist. I had mastered the samurai's sword the katana by the age of 12, and I can easily fit into the smallest of spaces. I've been a member of Sheffield Steel Roller Girls since summer 2009 and haven't looked back since."

"I didn't have a clue what roller derby was before I watched my sister skate at Summer Shovin' in July 2008, she had tried to explain the rules, but I think you have to see a bout to really "get" the sport! After watching the London girls I was hooked"

"I did not know you could fall in love with a sport! Of course I'd seen it happen before in others, and had gone along with that and taken part and spectated, but this was different... When roller derby got hold of me I realised this sport belonged to ME... no, I belonged to Roller Derby! Whatever! the skates had touched the floor and I was hooked!"

Mallory Hard-Knox

#369

Born bad, there is no way to overcome Mallory's fearsome track presence. To look into her face is to gaze upon the cold, lifeless eyes of a shark, the bloodied tusks of a crazed boar, and the snarling maw of a hungry gator.

Rollergirls Strike a Pose - A Fun night of drawing with Dr Sketchy's Sheffield

Sheffield Steel Rollergirls left the track behind on Tuesday night as they did their best to strike a pose as the special guest models for this month’s Dr Sketchy’s Sheffield event night IlluSKATE This! The event was marked as Dr Sketchy’s most successful to date and was held at the Greystones pub in Sheffield.

The girls demonstrated their awesome skills and alternative styles on stage as they performed a variety of roller derby poses, earning them many cheers from the assembled artists when the 10-15min time intervals were up.

Lynne Chapman who attended the night, said: “The rollergirls were excellent models and I can't believe how well they kept still, on wheels as well!!”

Issie Holloway, organizer for the event also said: “the rollergirls brought a completely different style and attitude to proceedings and our audience absolutely loved it."

Dr Sketchy’s is an alternative life-drawing group open to anyone who wants to give it a go, whether you’re a non-artist or fully fledged professional. You can catch them at this year’s Tramlines festival where they’ll be doing life-drawing sessions or visit them on the web at Dr Sketchy's Sheffield for more information.

Sheffield Steel Rollergirls would like to thank artist Lynne Chapman for letting us use her drawings from the evening on this page.

Night out with the Rollergirls!

Drowned in Sound and Harley Live present:
Rolled School (The Event Formerly Known As Rollerpalooza), in association with Sheffield Steel Rollergirls

Rolled School

Hopefully you remember the drill: turn up to a skating rink, don some skates, consume some beverages and roll around said rink to the sounds of live bands and DJs. Stage at one end, bar at the other. It's been way too long since the last one (2010!) - we have a feeling this is going to be fun...

Featuring:
Errors

Eighteen months on from the afrobeat-inspired robotic disco of ‘Come Down With Me,’ Errors return with their third full length album ‘Have Some Faith In Magic’ on Rock Action records - an album that once and for all dismisses the overly regurgitated “post-rock” tag. It’s their firmest move yet towards something that over the past few years the Glaswegian four-piece has always hinted at: Errors have just gone and made a pop record.

Plus much, much more...
