Meet the team they like skates

We have scoured the whole of Sheffield, including the weird bits, to bring you quite possibly the world's most awesome team*.  We're proud of our team, so here's a little on everyone in it.

*May not be true.  We're good, but perhaps that was a bit of an overstatement.

Captain 2011-12

"Id been to see an LA Derby Dolls bout that summer but didn’t have a clue what was going on! When I got back to Sheffield I saw a poster advertising that someone was trying to set up a team in Sheffield so I thought i'd give it ago. That was 3 years ago and it has taken over my life ever since"

"In 2008 two friends told me about an awesome new sport they were doing called roller derby. I checked it out online and could only find terrifying USA 1970s banked track weirdness. I decided they were crazy. After a while I’m still not sure what changed my mind, but I decided to give it a go and I’m so glad I did!"

"If I’m honest I didn’t have a clue what roller derby was but I didn’t care. It involved quad skates and cool outfits, that was good enough for me! I set about frantically trawling the internet to see if there was a team based in Sheffield. I was out of luck. So I had a crazy idea to try and start a team"

I got into roller derby really by accident, looking for something to do on Sunday afternoons that was more fun than lazing around eating chocolate. By chance i saw an article in the local paper about a new women’s sport called Roller Derby and the Sheffield team that was looking for members. A quick Google later and I was really excited to give it a go.

Nicky Fury

When asked to submit a bio for this site, Fury gave us a short excerpt from a film she just made up. A scary film, that someone needs to make. It is, however, an interesting insight into the Fury that needed to be censored in several places. Some say that if you read it, you will die within 24 hours.

Mia Malice

#23
Vice Captain 2011-12

"I would wear my skates 24 hours a day if I could (Sheffield would need to be flattened out a bit though!). My favourite position is jammer but I'm working hard on being better in the pack, my skate out song would probably be something by Daft Punk, I love dancing - I'm generally found on the dancefloor at afterparties!"

Kim Oh No

#00

"I'm the illegitimate child of Japanese assassin Lady Snowblood and a freak show contortionist. I had mastered the samurai's sword the katana by the age of 12, and I can easily fit into the smallest of spaces. I've been a member of Sheffield Steel Roller Girls since summer 2009 and haven't looked back since."

Eva Von Gorier

#85

"I didn't have a clue what roller derby was before I watched my sister skate at Summer Shovin' in July 2008, she had tried to explain the rules, but I think you have to see a bout to really "get" the sport! After watching the London girls I was hooked"

Skate Crasher

#11

"I did not know you could fall in love with a sport! Of course I'd seen it happen before in others, and had gone along with that and taken part and spectated, but this was different... When roller derby got hold of me I realised this sport belonged to ME... no, I belonged to Roller Derby! Whatever! the skates had touched the floor and I was hooked!"

Mallory Hard-Knox

#369

Born bad, there is no way to overcome Mallory's fearsome track presence. To look into her face is to gaze upon the cold, lifeless eyes of a shark, the bloodied tusks of a crazed boar, and the snarling maw of a hungry gator.

Double defeat but Sheffield‘s still smiling after an impressive debut

Nail biting finish for Sheffield’s first male roller derby team

Sheffield’s two roller derby teams, Sheffield Steel Rollergirls and The Inhuman League, held their first bout of 2012 on Saturday to a home crowd of over 600.

TIL made an impressive debut losing to Newcastle team, Tyne & Fear, by just one point. In a nail-biting finish, a late unfortunate penalty for TIL’s Jammie Dodger gave Tyne & Fear the advantage and the win, with the final score at 110-109.

Despite the loss, Captain Jerry Attric was proud, explaining, “For our first game as a team, we couldn’t have asked for better. We played our hearts out and after a difficult start, brought it back to a very even game. Can’t wait for the rematch”.

SSRG All Stars prove it is always a game of two halves

Sheffield’s losing streak continued when the Sheffield Steel Rollergirls’s A-team (the All Stars) took on High Wycombe’s Big Bucks High Rollers.

SSRG are known for being second half players and Saturday was no different. A penalty heavy first half left them trailing Big Bucks by 74 points.

They returned in the second half with some great tactical work and high scoring jams, particularly by Mia Malice. Their comeback, however, came a little too late and Big Bucks took the win with a final score of 144 to Sheffield’s 113.

SSRG have a history of being unlucky at home, winning just two of their six home matches. Conversely, they have won seven of their last eight away bouts and are known as a highly competitive team.

Roller derby

Roller derby is currently the world’s fastest growing sport, with over 70 teams in the UK. The game involves one skater from each team lapping members of the opposition for points, with a lot of bumps and bruises along the way.

Roller derby bouts are known as family fun days and this one was no different, with cupcakes, face painting, circus skills and Pin The Moustache on Poirot. The charity raffle raised over £300 for Bluebell Wood’s Children Hospice.

What Is Roller Derby?

Roller derby is currently one of the world’s fastest growing sports, with over 70 teams in the UK. November 2011 even saw the first ever roller derby world cup, with England getting an impressive 3rd place (below USA and Canada and just above Australia).

The game involves two team and is made up for 2 minute "jams". A jam involves one skater from each team attempting to lap members of the opposition for points, with a lot of bumps and bruises along the way.
